5You owe it to yourself to have one of these

I'll be the first to say that I hate the jacks that come with cars these days. They're unreliable, nonstandard, confusing to set up and use and sometimes you have a really hard time lifting your vehicle up with them.

When you have a flat tire on a dark cold rainy night without cell phone coverage, the last thing you need to be doing is trying to figure out how on earth your jack operates or worse, have it break on you or fail to work because it can't lift your vehicle.

For that reason, I've had a bottle jack in my trunk for over 3 decades. Unfortunately, bottle jacks have their own set of drawbacks when lifting vehicles --- namely, its sometimes hard to get a bottle jack to fit under a vehicle with a flat because the bottle is too tall. This shorty jack is about the best choice in bottle jacks for that use, I can comfortably get it under most any SUV. It's very robust and usable.

The pictures don't show it but it has a carrying handle which is nice.

I won't kid you. For lifting a light vehicle, this jack (tonage wise) is way overkill. You can stack 4 SUVs on top of each other and this Jack would lift them all (albeit only 3 inches) which is its lifting range but the key here is that it sits at 6" off the ground so you can get it under your vehicle.

Overall, I'll keep my 2 ton bottle jack in my truck for most uses but I'll carry this one in case I can't get under my vehicle with the 2 ton jack.

Lifting Weight: 24,000 LBS

The claim is that this jack lifts from 6" to 10 5/8" which is both correct but a bit deceiving because these jacks have a 1.5" screw extension that you can manually set BEFORE you start lifting but which you can't adjust once you start lifting:

How much can the piston lift? 3 inches
Without Extension: This jack sits just a hair over 6" (maybe 6 1/16") and it lifts 3 inches so to just over 9"
With the Screw Extension Screwe d out: It sits at just a hair over 7.5" and it lifts 3 inches so to just over 10.5"

So what this means is that if you barely get your jack under something at 6" and then start pumping, the maximum distance you can ever lift will 3" or to a height of 9" because you can't use the screw extension once you start to jack something up: follow me. It's a minor point that most mechanics know about but I thought I'd mention it for those of you who don't.

CONSTRUCTION QUALITY:
I swear but I can't be sure that this jack is the same sold under a dozen or so brands across the US. It seems solid and reliable and with a little care will likely be lifting stuff 50 years from now.

PUMPING ACTION:
In order to lift 12 tons, you wind up having to pump many more times. Lifting my truck was a piece of cake for this jack, much easier than with my 2 ton jack but I did have to pump more times - thats just the nature of the beast.

MYRIAD OF USE S:
These bottle jacks can be used for tons of purposes, they can be used to spread, lift, etc and they work sideways, upside down, upright, at an angle etc - part of the beauty of these little guys. Most emergency crews carry several of jacks with them to provide all kinds of emergency lifting, pushing, and separating activities. Of course, In my garage I have a floor jack, air jack etc but even in my garage there's use for a short little jack like this 12 ton shorty.

SHIPPING:
This one shipped from Ontario for me. 1 day shipping actually wound up taking 2 days (shipper's fault not Amazon) - that's just my experience.

RECOMMENDATION:
If you have a vehicle that sits less than 9' off the ground, this jack might just get you out of a bind in quick order if you get a flat (tonnage wise it's overkill but it just might fit under your car which is what matters). Just make sure you measure before you buy something like this to fix flats, last think you need is a car that sits 6" off the ground normal but 5" off the ground flat. In any case, good luck to you. If you have a full size truck, this might not provide much use for you, you might do better with a full size 4 or 6 ton jack (but measure first).

If I don't carry a good bottle jack in my car, I simply don't feel prepared (and I won't be)
